Marisa Alicea, Ph.D

Marisa Alicea is Professor of Sociology and a Vincent DePaul Professor as well as an affiliate faculty member of the Latin American and Latino Studies Department at DePaul University. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Marisa is co-author of Surviving Heroin: Interviews with Women in Methadone Clinics and co-edited with Dr. Toro-Morn a volume titled Migration and Immigration: A Global View. She has also published articles concerning the US Latinx experience, gender issues, immigration and leadership studies.

 

For 10 years, she served as Dean of the School for New Learning at DePaul University. In her capacity as Dean, she helped raise over 6 million dollars for scholarships and to support various faculty and college wide initiatives. Marisa also led efforts to develop new curricular programs, improve student retention rates and launched partnership with various professional and community organizations. Since 2006, Marisa has done extensive work in Kenya to help advance leadership studies. She's done work in other international sites including Thailand, Ireland and Mexico.

 

Marisa currently serves an associate editor of Latino Studies, a premier journal in US Latinx studies. She has served on a number of non-profit boards including those of Mujeres Latinas en Accion and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture. Recently, Marisa led efforts and launched the founding Latinx External Advisory Board at DePaul University.
