Miriam Centeno Marrero

Miriam is a librarian specializing in preservation and conservation, a visual artist, and a researcher with more than 20 years of experience in her field. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in anthropology from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois in 1994. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts (MA) from the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College of Chicago, Illinois, and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She has served as a Library Technician in the Preservation Directorate at the Library of Congress in the U.S., as Conservation Coordinator for the Sheridan Libraries and Museums Department of Conservation and Preservation at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and until 2019 as Collections Care Coordinator in the Preservation Services unit of the University of Illinois Library in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. She was also the Preservation and Digitization Coordinator for Ohio State University Libraries in Columbus, Ohio. Since August 2023, she has served as consultant / Leader (Coordinator) in Preservation at the General Archive and National Library of Puerto Rico, affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP). Miriam has conducted workshops and lectures and published on the preservation of library and documentary collections. She was chair of the Preservation Week initiative committee of the American Library Association (ALA). Likewise, she has been an active member of ALA and a member of the Preservation and Reformatting Administrators Section (PARS) of ALA. She was also Co-Chair of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois and a member of its Preservation Committee. She has participated actively in several grant-funded education and preservation projects. Miriam is a founding member of the Governing Board of the Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Puerto Rico (CENCOR).
