Adrián Viajero Román is an interdisciplinary Puerto Rican artist and advocate whose practice spans portraiture, assemblage, installation, painting, and sculpture to explore themes of race, migration, memory, sacred materiality, and identity. Living between Brooklyn and Puerto Rico, he reimagines portraiture through immersive environments that honor resilience, dignity, and cultural history while confronting systemic injustices faced by Puerto Rican communities on the island and in the diaspora. His work has been recognized by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Competition, with major exhibitions at El Museo del Barrio, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, among others. Román’s installations transform reclaimed heirlooms and everyday objects into living archives and altars, paying homage to elders and diasporic histories while inspiring empathy, respect, and justice. With residencies at Google X and Facebook, and community-centered projects such as Dia de Muertos offerings, his work bridges memory, activism, and artistry to ensure Puerto Rican stories are seen, heard, and remembered.
